Hydrogen and Fuel Cells as an alternative to gas

Have you ever wondered why there can?t be a cheaper, cleaner way to power your car? The truth is that there are many in the works, behind the scenes in the automotive industry. One very promising technology that could replace gas, and help lower fuel costs, is hydrogen fuel cell technology. What?s that, really? It?s a method of converting water into energy for your car, rather than using costly, polluting gasoline.

Hydrogen fuel cell technology has been catapulted onto the alternative fuel world stage with enthusiasm. Running automobiles on an unlimited supply of water containing hydrogen captures imaginations. This particular alternative fuel technology, however, may be a case of what most scientists and engineers come know, that is, most any technological feet is possible, but at what cost? The more critical aspects of cost and viability in real world applications outweigh the novelty of the achievement.
So how tdoes it work? Hydrogen may be used in an internal combustion engine configured to run on liquid hydrogen though most of the talk is about using hydrogen in fuel cells to generate electricity. A fuel cell is an electromechanical device which uses hydrogen combined with oxygen to produce electricity. That electricity, in turn, drives the electric motors that propel the car. Fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) are thus electric vehicles.

Fuel cells were a part of the Apollo Mission in 1964, employed to run the on board electronics of the lunar module, yet in the intervening years since they have gained little ground in real world automotive applications. Honda has leased a single FCV to a carefully screened Southern California family. This is the only Honda FCV being driven by any non industry citizen in the country. They refuel at a plant nearby, one of a handful in the country.

The source for hydrogen can be water, the most abundant resource in the world as advocates of this technology will point out. Hydrogen exists nowhere in a pure state, however, and must be isolated from compounds that contain a hydrogen element. This process is energy intensive. Obtaining hydrogen from water requires splitting the molecule apart via electrolysis. This is the second most common method for obtaining hydrogen. Currently the lion?s share (95%) of all hydrogen produced in the U.S. comes from natural gas through a process called steam methane reforming (SMR).

Why is hydrogen overwhelmingly derived from natural gas, and not water? The answer lies in the cost of procuring hydrogen through energy-intensive electrolysis. Acquisition through electrolysis of water may become more appealing when scarcity and higher costs of natural gas alter the equation. Using electricity generated from renewable sources is possible as advocates suggest, but this is an inefficient use of that electricity when compared with other alternatives.

The logic in using natural gas or other energy sources to create hydrogen when instead those sources could be used directly to power a vehicle seems questionable. Introducing an added step?converting natural gas or electrolyzing water?requires more energy. The energy will come from fossil fuels such as coal, natural gas, oil, or other renewable sources. However, technology is constantly advancing, and there may be a day, soon, where you can skip the pump, and power your car from the water hose outside.

Running on Fumes – Being Green saves Green

Hello All:

Unless you have been living on the moon in a glass bubble you would be aware of the fact that prices and especially gas prices are on the rise. Not just a little price hike here and there but through the stratosphere price increases for a gallon of gas.

I guess now is a good time to go green which means conservation of gasoline. Whether or not you like being a tree hugger.

Think of it this way going green can mean two things today, one is being a save the planet type person or two save yourself a bunch of green (money) by being green (tree hugger).

What have I done to be green that is save money?

Well I started driving differently:

• I set my cruise control closer to the speed limit. When you drive the speed limit it has two effects um well three:

  1) Saves gasoline and so saves money on fuel.
  2) Saves the environment. If you drive slower you spew out less junk and toxins into the air. Makes that chipmunk on the side of the road smile.
  3) Saves on speeding tickets. Saving you a lot of green and demerit points to boot.

  So driving the speed limit helps in many ways.

• I don’t break really hard unless there is a big truck in the way (you know safety issues). This will increase fuel mileage or for those using metric kilometers and an added plus you will save some green replacing your brakes less often since the will last longer.
• I try not to have jack rabbit starts. What does that mean? Well if you at a light and some guy in a hot car wants to drag you off the light then you give the thumbs down because you want to be green (a tree hugger and save money). Also saves on the tires especially if they are a specialty tire and so it is green by being a tree hugger and a green money saver.
• Reduce the weight you have to carry in your vehicle. Every 100 pounds less gives you better fuel mileage. Just think of it this way don’t carry those four cases of 2/4 in the trunk reduce it to one in this way you may have less friends but you will be able to go farther on a tank of gas.
• Here is an odd tip, try to buy gas from the same gas station chain. Since at times all gas isn’t created equally your computer may have a conniption trying to figure out what you did and so may give you poor mileage for a tank or two. Aren’t computers great.

There are a number of other things you can do to help being green saving money and trees at the same time but I guess I would have to be here giving you the low down for hours.

Lets just say this: Drive sensible and the speed limit and you will be GREEN.
