Stamp out Fleas with Organic Pest Control

Stamp out Fleas with Organic Pest Control

What pet owner hasn?t worried once or twice that their beloved pet had developed fleas? Worse yet, how many have worried that the fleas had spread to other parts of the house? Fortunately, there are numerous organic flea control remedies that can both keep fleas from infesting your home and can get rid of them once a pet has been infested.

Those with pets need to know that for every flea they find on their pet, there can be more than thirty more fleas somewhere in that pet?s environment. Your pet can get fleas from being outdoors or can get fleas through contact with a visitor?s pet.

This is why its important to learn all about the organic flea repellent remedies available that will be both safe and effective on your pet.

Make sure you give your pet a bath and comb your pet on a regular basis. Pets that already have fleas should be combed with a comb that?s been dipped in a glass of soapy water. Organic repellents and deterrents include the use of citrus products. For example, you can pour a cup of boiling water over an entire sliced lemon, including the skin. Score the skin to release more citrus oil. Let the mixture soak and sponge it on the animal. Believe it or not, it will kill fleas immediately.

Another organic pest control remedy involves using Brewer?s yeast and garlic, or apple cider vinegar in small amounts to the pet?s food. This will repel fleas quite nicely. Cats, however, shouldn?t consume garlic.

Topical organic remedies include cedar-based shampoo, cedar oil and sleeping mats that contain cedar chips. Fleas do not like cedar of any kind and will be repelled from areas where you put it. Other insects are repelled by organic cedar products as well.

In the horrible event that you find you?ve got fleas in your carpeting, you should first vacuum the entire carpet, paying special attention to low traffic areas. Seal the vacuum bag and get it out of there. Another organic method for getting rid of fleas is to obtain a wide, shallow pan, like a cake pan, and fill it half-full with soapy water. Place the pan on the floor and shine a light over the area. The fleas will jump up to the heat of the lamp and will land in the water and, because the water is soapy, the fleas will simply drown. Do this for a few nights and it will make a big difference.

If you?re desperate for a long-lasting organic and safe method of flea control in a room, purchase a nontoxic flea trap. Basically, you place a sticky pad under a grid on the plastic device and plug it into a regular light socket. The light and heat from the device attracts fleas on a permanent basis from as far away as 25 feet. The fleas jump up, fall through the grid and stick onto the sticky pad. The sticky pad is easily replaceable when it is used up.

Finally, the best organic flea control for outdoor use involves buying flea control nematodes (worms) that are 100% safe and can be spread throughout the lawn and garden. These organic little creatures kill the flea larvae and pupae so that the fleas don?t reach adulthood. That way, your pets won?t be bringing in fleas from your yard.

Flea control doesn?t have to be complicated nor does it have to involve the use of toxic chemicals.

Your pets don?t deserve the toxicity and neither do you.

Keep your Dog Happy With Organic Dog Food

Jun 01, 2008 in Pets / Animals

Keep youKeep your Dog Happy With Organic Dog Foodr Dog Happy With Organic Dog Food

It?s safe to say that Westerners are crazy about their dogs and that the pet industry is easily a billion dollar industry in the US alone. Everyone wants the best in bedding, clothes and toys for their special dog or dogs. Many have even turned to feeding ?Fido? organic dog food, often available only at specialized shops or over the Internet. Nevertheless, organic dog food is big business and many dog owners swear by it.

Believe it or not, manufacturers can get certain types of their dog food certified by certifying bodies as being Certified Organic. There are organic dog foods containing organic beef, organic chicken and purely organically-grown grains, often supplemented with vegetable extracts that are all organic, as well as vitamins and minerals. The cost is higher than for regular dog food; however, many dog owners will gladly pay the extra price.

A typical organic dog food begins with beef that has been produced using strict organic guidelines, including that the cattle be raised without exposure to synthetic fertilizers, growth hormones, antibiotics or other chemical substances. The cattle must graze on organically-created pastures with a diet producing the leanest beef possible and beef that is high in omega 3 and omega 6 oils, linoleic acid, vitamin E and beta carotenes.

For optimal sources of fiber, organic dog food adds organic vegetables in ways that maintain their high vitamin levels. Some vegetables in organic dog food include carrots, red beets and broccoli. Herbs that provide an antioxidant effect include organic thyme, oregano and rosemary, all of which have healthful properties in dogs.

Because dogs need essential fatty acids, organic dog food provides organic sources of linoleic acid and linolenic acids. These essential fatty acids are important in handling lipid soluble vitamins like vitamins A, D, E and K; in addition, they help metabolize cholesterol in the pet. Organic sources of these fatty acids include cold-processed canola oil, sunflower oil and organic vegetables and seeds. Organic flax oil contains omega 3 fatty acids for a shiny skin and coat.

One of the least recognizable types of fatty acids in organic food is the omega 9 fatty acid category, which consists of stearic and oleic acids. These help stabilize the flavor, texture and aroma of dog food and are derived from cold-pressed sunflower oil.

Cold processing makes this oil a good antioxidant for dogs.

Some estimates say that up to 20 percent of all dogs suffer from some type of allergy and its believed that food sensitivity accounts for a third of all allergies. Organic dog food, because it complies with strict food safety and production methods, is believed to be hypoallergenic to dogs. Some dog food companies routinely test their products for allergens and, because they carefully trace their ingredients, there is a decreased chance of dog food allergens.

Most organic dog food avoids being allergenic by keeping common allergens, including cord, soybeans, wheat, meat by-products, milk by-products, artificial flavors, chemical preservatives and artificial colorants, out of the product. As a preservative, many manufacturers use bee propolis to preserve the product; this is a naturally occurring substance that is low in allergenic potential.

Organic dog food is extremely healthy and safe for dogs and, in some cases, it may be worth the extra cost to the owner. The dog will likely love the food and it will probably have an impact on his or her overall health in the long run.

Dog Toys as Constant Companions for Dogs

May 15, 2008 in Pets / Animals

Dog Toys as constant Companions for Dogs

Dog toys are a very important part of pet accessories. Most of the companies who manufacture dog toys claim to make indestructible toys, where the quality is guaranteed. There are indeed many unique dog toys available now, they can simply be ordered through the Internet from anywhere in the world.

Amongst the dog toys which are featured, the ball is the most common and basic toy.

Chew toys for dogs is also popular, so that the dog can be kept busy with something to chew. Most of these chew toys are flavored, so that the dogs enjoy the experience and are redirected from chewing other objects in the house and destroying them. Chewing then becomes fun for the dogs and is a part of their playtime activity.

The patented chain of new Busy Buddy toys has other features too. The toy can be unscrewed and can be loaded with treats like peanut butter or cheese bits. The opening is adjustable, if it is wide, the treats are easily accessible and if the opening is closed down, then the playtime can be made longer. The toys can easily be cleaned in a dishwasher.

There are also groove-like dog toys which have the texture of meat on a bone. The dog enjoys an ultimate chewing experience with it. This toy uses a new patented technology which bonds all natural rubber to a tough solid core. The dogs love the dual texture, and keep wanting more of it.

Dog toys must be safe for them, and should be given to them according to their activity level and size. Dogs can easily get attached to their toys and sometimes, even if a ball is half-eaten and torn, they continue to play with it with renewed enthusiasm every time they see it. Toys can be their best friends, because they can play with the toys even when they are alone. This activity definitely improves their physical and mental fitness.

Besides, dogs are not choosy about their toys. They are always ready to play with something new that is given to them. Of course they take a fancy to some things more than others. Check out the size of the toy, so that it is not too small and the dog does not stand the risk of swallowing it. The quality of the toy should also be checked by your vet for safety.

If you use toys made of hard rubber, they are safe and last a long time. Squeaking toys may be fun for your dog, but may not be a pleasant experience for the people in the house, so it is better to avoid them.

What is the Trend with Pet Clothing?

May 15, 2008 in Pets / Animals

What is the Trend with Pet Clothing?

A pet dog or a pet cat is considered a family member. Also, a pet dog is a source of companionship to many people, who live alone. Pet Clothing is therefore considered a necessity for most pets, as pet owners consider coats, sweaters and shoes imperative for cold weather. But fashion has taken the first place now, and there are boutiques and shops selling pet clothing keeping in mind the latest trends in the market.

The dog is the popular pet and pet lovers like to shop for expensive and exclusive dog clothes, jewelry, dresses and accessories. The pet is today pampered by the whole family and they enjoy dressing it up, not only to keep it warm and comfortable, but also to have some fun. Shopping for the new canine relative has been on the rise in America, and the trend is increasing.

The designer pet fashion industry has become a lifestyle for today’s pets. The quality of the clothing and the merchandise offered is of the highest quality, because the prices are high too. There is a large variety of clothing available, and you can browse through several sites on the net to find something suitable and comfortable for your four-legged friend.

Machine-knitted and hand-crocheted sweaters are the new trend with pet clothing. The material is acrylic and keeps the pet warm in winter and gives a fashionable look. There is attractive clothing for dogs like dog booties, stylish bandannas, doggie tee shirts which are easily available. In any case the clothing should not be heavy and the pet should enjoy it.

When any clothing is ordered in any pet clothes shop, it is generally customized. So the clothing has to be made to fit your pet, taking into account its weight, height and length. There are no standard sizes because pets belonging to the same breed may differ. On the other hand, the same pet clothing can fit pets of different breeds which have the same weight.

For the small dog breeds like the Chihuahuas, terriers, dachshunds and poodles the demand nowadays is for vests, raincoats, lounge wear, tops and jackets. But some like to dress their dog in formal wear or lounge wear. There are long lists of suppliers who specialize in making clothes for tiny dogs, and there are others who can turn out the most fashionable clothes for big dogs. So, no matter whatever the size, the latest fashion will always be available for your pet.

How to build a Doghouse with the Correct Dimensions

May 14, 2008 in Pets / Animals

How to build a Doghouse with the Correct Dimensions

There are many plans for doghouses available on the net, and you can download them and use them to build one for your pet. There are custom doghouses and specially insulated ones for very cold weather and there are special dimensions and suggestions offered, which you can vary according to the size of your dog. Most of the time, the plan includes construction details, materials lists and even photos.

As per the norms of the American Humane Society, the height of a doghouse is the height of the dog plus nine inches. Similarly the length is an added eighteen inches to the length of the dog and for the width you need to add twelve inches to the dog’s length.

Step by step instructions are provided in the free doghouse plans, and even a beginner DIYer can follow them using common household tools. There are different plans for building a doghouse in the garden and inside the house. After all it has to be made into a cozy retreat for your pet, so that it likes to live and sleep in its kennel when it is resting.

The material used is wood, but it is of different types for the floor, the roof and the exterior. For the floor and the roof rough-sawn treated pine is recommended. For the framing you can use untreated pine and pressure-treated pine for the under floor skids. The walls can be made of plywood.

Pressure treated timber should not be put on any parts of the doghouse, which the dog can chew. It can be toxic, because it contains preservatives. Hence the pressure treated timber is put on the roof, floor and skids. The parts which are likely to be gnawed by the dog are the walls and the inside framing, and these should therefore be made of untreated timber.

If your dog is in the habit of chewing and gnawing everything around it, then untreated timber can be used for the entire doghouse. But untreated timber when exposed to weather might not last long; hence it should be well sealed and painted, so that it does not absorb moisture.

The same treatment should be given to the exterior plywood, because if it is not pressure treated, it will not be moisture-resistant. Special care should be taken about the painting, so it is best to use Wood Primer, Enamel Undercoat and Super Gloss Enamel. This prevents it from becoming toxic and does not allow water to seep in and rot.

Insulated doghouses are common in cold countries, if you want to have a proper outdoor doghouse. If the size is right and the dog is in the habit of living outdoors, this could be an ideal solution.

Cat Furniture for Scratching, Climbing and Sleeping

May 14, 2008 in Pets / Animals

Cat Furniture for Scratching, Climbing and Sleeping

Cat furniture includes cat houses, cat dogs and beds, cat trees and cat towers. Cats are active animals and their favorite activity is to watch the world from a high position. Besides, they have an instinctive need to scratch all the time, so there are cat scratching posts also available for this purpose.

Because of their scratching habit it is best to provide them with a scratching post and teach them to use it. Otherwise they will scratch and claw furniture, doors or any other objects in the house. There are cat scratching posts available in different styles and sizes. Most of the posts are made of solid wood, and then covered with special carpets. Some have a sisal covering and this is machine wrapped and glued tightly to the wood.

Some cats like to scratch only when they are outside. But for cats that are indoors most of the time, they need some furniture for climbing and playing as well. For this purpose there are cat gyms, cat trees, cat condos and other cat tree furniture which can be put inside the house. The cats then get enough space to lounge, sleep and play at their own leisure.

All furniture is available in various colors, sizes and designs. First of all the size of the cat needs to be considered and then the space in the house. If the house has a balcony, the furniture can be put there as well. There are cat gyms and kitty gyms, towers with special toys attached to them and sometimes there is a combination of scratching posts and towers.

The cat condos and kitty condos even come in one, two or three storey structures. Some offer funny cat playgrounds, which have tabular boxes and the cats can hide and jump around them. There are cute steps available too, which come in different widths and number of steps. Such pet stairs suitable for cats and kittens of all sizes, and they are especially a favorite of the small cats, because it helps them to reach their favorite places easily.

There is a large collection of cat houses available as well. There are indoor cat houses and outdoor cat houses. The outdoor houses are made from kiln dried wood, because they are subjected to the harsh temperature changes outside. But the indoor ones are cozy and soft. They are often made of soft synthetic fabric outside and soft synthetic material inside. After all it is the most comfortable sleeping place for your favorite pet and it should be warm and secure.

“How To Grow a Garden For Your Parrot!”, by Nora Caterino

“How To Grow a Garden For Your Parrot!”, by Nora Caterino

*************************************************

I’m sure you are already aware that a varied diet for your parrot is crucial to a long, healthy life. My birds need the mix of vitamins and minerals available in a diet which includes fruits and vegetables. In the wild, parrots eat a variety of grasses, nuts, seeds, fruits, and even bugs.

Do you ever wonder what toxins are on those vegetables we buy for our birds in the store? I do.

I worry about it for myself, but since I am well over 100 pounds in weight, I know the effects can be much more serious on my feathered children who weigh, at most, a few pounds. Smaller species weigh only ounces or less. Think of the impact any residual insecticide would have on your bird.

I also want my pets to have fun foods that they love. Food should be a pleasurable experience. Whether you feed a pellet-based diet or a seed-based diet, adding the fresh produce from your bird garden will become an event your parrot relishes.

Every spring, I clear a space in my lawn for the garden. I normally use about a three to four foot square area. I remove an inch or two of soil, replacing it with sterile potting soil. The biggest bags are inexpensive enough and two to three bags are all I need.

I create rows or furrows in the soil so that I can plant different plants in each row. A four foot square plot should not contain more than two or three rows so the plants have room to grow. The edges of the entire plot, I reserve for my sunflower plants, leaving a gap so I can enter the main garden.

Sundance, my sun conure loves hot peppers. I select hot peppers from her seed mix and plant two or three plants of these. I also purchase or save seed from last year’s harvest of habanera, Thai, and other hot peppers. She loves them all and so do I. This creates one garden row in my small plot, because I want to share some of her goodies!

In the next row, I plant English peas and bunch beans. The English peas will have to be staked as they grow, but stakes are easy to find and can be used year after year. Watching Sunny hold a fresh English pea shell in her claw while opening it to get the small peas out is so much fun for me, and she loves to eat them.

The bunch beans will not have to be staked and will grow what are commonly called “string beans”. I pick these while the beans are young and tender. All my birds, both large and small, love to eat the fresh beans. If I have an excess, of course I cook some of these for the family.

I try to save a little space to sprinkle leaf lettuce or spinach seed. When the leaves are young, the birds love them. I don’t allow the lettuce to grow every tall and continually thin out the crop. I never, ever allow my babies to have iceberg lettuce because it has zero nutrition.

Last, I plant the sunflowers around the edge of the garden. This protects the garden somewhat from intruders and makes it very pretty as the tall sunflowers grow and blossom. I thin the sunflowers so they are about a foot apart; I always seem to plant too many.

The young plants which I pull up serve as early green food that is healthy and relished by my feathered kids of all sizes. I make sure I have plenty of sunflowers that are allowed to mature, however, because the wild birds will come for their share!

My parrots relish fresh sunflower seeds. In fact, since the birds like the seeds fresh from the sunflower head so much better than what is in their seed mix, these are used as training rewards during the harvest season. I refrigerate a few heads or freeze some heads to last over time, but the birds most love the ones fresh from the garden.

If you have the space, of course, you could add corn, squash, zucchini, or any vegetable your bird loves. I try to ensure I make my bird garden manageable in size for me, but large enough to supply my treasured babies with treats.

For my small birds from parakeet to small conures, I simply purchase a rectangular flower tray, or often use a shallow flat tray of any kind as long as it is cleaned thoroughly.

Plastic storage containers that I have lost the lids that match work very well. I punch several drainage holes in the bottom and use the container again and again. Of course, you can just provide a spot of clean dirt in your yard, if you prefer.

I fill my container with clean, sterile potting soil, stopping about ? inch from the container “fill line”. Then I sprinkle the seeds from my bird’s seed mix on top of the soil, covering with more sterile soil. I tamp (press) the soil down lightly and add some water.

Within as few a three days, sprouts will begin to appear. I water as needed, keeping the soil fairly moist. When the sprouts grow to two to three inches in height, I begin to pull small quantities of greens up by the roots.

I attach the sprouts to the cage bars with a bird-safe clip. If I have a bit of dirt attached, I don’t worry. Sterile potting soil is non-toxic and my birds like to nibble it and knock it off the roots.

A note to the small bird owner: do not buy a “bird garden” from a bird magazine. They will send you a VERY small pot, some bird seed, some soil and tell you to do exactly what I have recommended! Those kits cost $5.95 or more and you can use that money to buy a new toy for your small bird instead!
