You can still upgrade to a business class seat by paying less, even if you don’t have the miles or the status. Standby upgrades are offered by many airlines, which can be done on the day before or the day of the flight. The cost difference is often affordable, but still check before you finalize the seat.

It is possible to buy full-fare economy tickets and get upgraded to business class. These tickets are definitely more expensive than the deeply discounted economy and sale fares. But it is worth its while, because they are a good deal cheaper than first-class tickets, and it is then useful for travelers who want to travel business class but at a lower cost.

If you are determined to travel business class, the last resort for you would be to buy a business class ticket, but a cheap one. Some airlines have cheap upper class tickets, so choose an airline which makes such offers.

And as a last try, you can always ask at the gate. Sometimes there may be business class seats available after all the regular business class ticket holders and all the pre-paid and award mile upgrades have got their seats. You may just be lucky, because it does not hurt to ask. Be pleasant about it, and you might just get the free upgrade, or maybe pay a little extra, but it is still worth asking.

There are a few budget airlines which offer a business-class like flying experience in spite of the low fares. Ask around and check what perks the budget airline offers, and you might get the business-class experience with one of them.

Try and avoid flying on holiday dates. That is when most of the people are flying, and those dates turn out to have the most expensive fares.

Using the multi-city search provided by both Travelocity and Orbitz, you can book multi-city trips. Another tip, if you want to go to Europe from the U.S., fly to London first and then to the Continent, it works out cheaper. In any case use the airfare search sites which are tailored to your situation. Check out more than one site, because one site does not always give the best fare.

There is of course no magic formula to find the cheapest fares, but you must always compare prices amongst the websites, which is not such a great effort. Once you know when you want to travel, just look around for the tickets and the earlier, the better. It naturally depends on your leave and the festivities that you have to attend and cannot miss.

But, as a rule flying on a holiday is a pleasure because the planes and airports are less crowded, everyone is more relaxed and traveling can be a relaxing experience.

The World’s Most Dangerous Countries to Travel to

Some countries are more unfortunate than others to be hit by natural disasters, by terrorists or by nuclear warfare. Such countries have now become dangerous places to visit, because of the fear of being killed, to find oneself in the midst of a social upheaval or a natural calamity like the tsunami. There are dangerous diseases like the avian flu and the black plague, there are dangerous human beings like Attila the Hun and Osama bin Laden and there are natural dangers to human beings from the tsunami and Mount Vesuvius.

Today’s most dangerous countries to travel would be those where there is bloodshed and terror. Iraq is a frightening example, and countries like Afghanistan and Zimbabwe are being destroyed by terrorism, oppression, poverty and death. Since death is a common factor in such countries, there are no rules of law and education holds no importance.

Haiti has become a dangerous place to visit; there are continuous demonstrations and confrontations between armed groups. Looting is rampant and there is random violent crime with kidnapping, carjacking and assault. Nigeria is equally prone to violent crimes. There is a total lack of law and order and there is a constant tension between various religious communities and rival ethnic groups. Road travel is dangerous in Nigeria, as there are many road robberies.

In Saudi Arabia there has been a lot of terrorist activity. Westerners have often been attacked here by gunmen and terrorist groups. Indonesia is also unpopular for American tourists because of the violence and terrorist actions there against the Americans. Besides, the tsunami hit the country extensively in 2004, and tourists have reduced there drastically.

Security threat in a country like Yemen is very high. Terrorist activities are common and groups or extremist individuals may attack westerners. Violence related to illegal drug trade is high in Colombia, and most of the violent activity there is by narcoterrorist groups. Lebanon has been totally destroyed by warfare, there are landmines everywhere and it is risky to visit the country now.

The Central African Republic is governed by rebel forces. Armed robberies along the roads are common, and it has become totally unsafe to travel freely. In Israel, the West Bank and Gaza, the threat of violence is very high. And in the Democratic Republic of Congo the ongoing military operations have somehow brought more violence into the country. There are a large number of vehicle thefts, extra-judicial killings, rapes, kidnappings and ethnic tensions.

Pakistan has seen a lot of massacre in the past few months, so tourists are afraid of venturing there. The political unrest and the various terrorist activities are making the survival of the Pakistanis difficult. Even Kyrgyzstan is untouched by tourists because of the political instability of the country.

However, in all these countries the employees of multinational corporations and nongovernmental organizations are still going. Of course they risk their lives if they visit one of the world’s most dangerous countries, but they do their research first and train themselves before they travel.

New Orleans is another favorite for tourists, because of its special artistic character. It is extremely affordable for tourists and a total fun place.

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania has one of the country’s most impressive cultural collections in the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh. The international arts fairs are also popular with the tourists and because of its 250 year history many events have been lined up for this year.

The American Whiskey Trail is a historical tour of America’s relationship with spirits through half a dozen historical spots across five states. There are a dozen distilleries and the journey begins in Pennsylvania, through Tennessee, and then through the limestone rock and rolling blue grass hills of Kentucky. George Washington’s Mt. Vernon estate is also a part of the journey, showing the Colonial-era America.

New Jersey, though industrialized is still a tourist attraction due to the southern Jersey shore. There are charming boardwalk towns like Cape May, Ocean City and Wildwood. The charm is still Victorian with the Sunset Beach and the beautiful bird sanctuary.

And cities like New York and San Francisco have a charm of their own. Everything about New York is complex and tourists love it and hate it at the same time. They love the old world charm of San Francisco or the imperial grandeur of Washington DC. The big cities and the immense natural beauty have made America a tourist’s paradise.
